Stitching, cutting and sticking
Well the weather yesterday was hideous - wet, windy and COLD! (And as I type, here comes the rain again today, so no air show for us this weekend. I feel so sorry for organisers of outdoor events this year.) But hideous weather + holiday = stitching, which can't be too bad.
I finished this off yesterday. This is an Ackworth Friendship RR belonging to Chris. She was let down on the last round so I offered to stitch it for her. I really enjoyed it and whizzed through these couple of squares. (The fabric is white, not blue, but it's so dreary today this is what the photo looks like.)
It's ready to go home again now.
But the main theme of my weekend is going to be patchwork. I've had time to get my fabric and machine out and yesterday I started a pattern I've had for a long time - Clifford by McKenna Ryan.
This is how far I've got at the moment. I've never done anything like this before but it's fun and seems surprisingly easy so far. Hopefully I can finish the piecing this weekend.
I need some advice though. I've never quilted before. What sort of wadding should I get (this won't be washed - it's going on the wall) and what thread do I use to quilt? And do I quilt round every little piece? Help! Any advice gratefully received!
And the patchwork bug has struck again because I joined another block of the month.
This is from Antique Angel and I've been looking at it since Easter. You can see the pattern on the right but I'm doing it in the colours on the left - more browns than greys. They suggest freezer paper for the applique for this one, so I really need to do some research and figure it all out.
I nearly signed up for another one too - Your Home or Mine by Lynette Anderson - but just managed to stop myself. Though if it keeps raining you never know what I might have to do to cheer myself up....

Chris' RR looks lovely Nicki. Thank you so much for stitching on it for her. I was so disappointed when she was let down.

ReplyDeleteRe: wadding. I think it depends if you are planning to hand quilt it or machine quilt it and also what weight you want it to be?
The polyester stuff is a bit too bouncy for machine quilting (apparently). The cotton/flatter wadding is nicer I think.
If you have a local quilt shop they will be able to advise you? Or maybe ring The Cotton Patch?Alternatively you can also buy fleece fabric which is good for backing and can be used instead of wadding and is cheap.
YLI quilting thread is good (according to my patchwork teacher) but again it probably depends on whether you are hand or machine quilting. Whatever you do I can't wait to see it :)

ReplyDeleteGood on you with the patchwork too - you might even eventually pass the bug onto me to start mine! ;) Karen very kindly showed me how to use freezer paper and use the needleturn method for applique when she came here for a SAL day, but I still haven't put it into practice {hanging head in shame}. Look forward to seeing your progress :)
